Beyond the Teeth: Understanding the Connection Between Jaw Pain and Sleep
At Emerald Coast Dental Sleep Medicine, we recognize that healthy sleep, comfortable jaw function, and overall well-being are closely connected. Many patients who struggle with jaw discomfort also experience sleep-related breathing problems. In some cases, the two may be more closely connected than people realize.
Â
Symptoms of Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD), often referred to as "TMJ," may include:

Jaw pain or tenderness
Clicking or popping of the jaw joint
Morning headaches
Teeth grinding or clenching
Facial muscle fatigue
Worn or damaged teeth
Poor sleep quality

The Connection Between TMJ Disorders and Sleep

For some patients, nighttime grinding and clenching may be associated with underlying sleep-disordered breathing. When breathing becomes restricted during sleep, the body may respond by activating the jaw muscles in an effort to help maintain an open airway. Over time, this can contribute to muscle tension, joint discomfort, headaches, and excessive wear on the teeth.

Our Approach

Dr. Yee evaluates both jaw function and airway health when developing treatment recommendations. By considering the relationship between sleep and jaw discomfort, we can often identify contributing factors that may otherwise go unnoticed. For appropriate candidates, custom oral appliances may help support the airway during sleep while also reducing stress on the jaw joints and surrounding muscles.
